The latest version of Explore Oak Island Days will go on this year despite renewed digging efforts to unlock the famed island’s secrets. Dan Blankenship, partial owner of the island, recently confirmed an agreement was reached with the Oak Island Tourism Society to host the celebration from June 20 to 22. A brief dig occurred in February with plans to resume more intense exploration this spring and summer. Mr. Blankenship said there may be some restrictions for visitors this time around. “If there’s somewhere we are digging and for safety reasons, or other reasons, we may have to keep them away from that area,” he said. Explore Oak Island Days in years past has welcomed up to 300 people including society members and guests from as far away as Holland and England, as well as a local crowd. In addition to the island tours, Explore Oak Island Days features island and treasure-hunting artifacts and guest speakers. Danny Hennigar, member of the society, said he expects the new dig to add a little mystique to this year’s event. “The interest has always been there,” he said. “And it’s only growing. We expect this to be one of the best Explore Oak Island Days yet.” For more information on Oak Island, check out the society's web page at http://www.oakislandsociety.ca or its overseas counterpart at http://www.oakislandtreasure.co.uk
