South Shore Now - 1 July 2008 Adam Jacobs With pirate fever at an all-time high there's little surprise this year's edition of Explore Oak Island Days (EOID) drew more than 600 people. People came from all over the world for the June 20 to 22 event, from Nova Scotia to New Mexico, from Iceland to Alberta and the United Kingdom. "We had people come from Scotland, even a young couple from Reykjavik, Iceland," said EOID spokesman and tour guide Danny Hennigar. "The couple weren't here specifically for Oak Island but they made us part of their honeymoon." The couple was staying at the Oak Island Resort and didn't have access to a vehicle. When Mr. Hennigar found out, he made sure transportation to and from the island was provided. "They were a lovely young couple, newlyweds, and they had a great time," he said. Of the 600 people who took in some part of EOID, Mr. Hennigar estimated about half took in one of the several two-hour tours. Those who visited Oak Island or the spa were exposed to various guest speakers and experts as well as historical treasure-hunting artifacts from the island. But of all the Explore Oak Island Days thus far, this one will forever hold a special place in the heart of Mr. Hennigar, one of the island's biggest promoters. "You see, quite a few years ago I befriended a gentleman from Ohio who was up to see Oak Island," he said. "Well, last year his arthritis prevented him from taking the tour. And on his way home he died unexpectedly in Moncton. We sent a card to his family and don't you suppose they showed up this year. "There were three of them and we took them out to the island where they got some alone time. It was the most touching thing that happened over the weekend. That's just a sample of what could and does happen at Explore Oak Island Days." Source - http://southshorenow.ca/news/news/index005.php
