One theory exists that the British Army were thought to have created the pit during the American War of Independence. British Army engineers were thought to have hidden money on the island to prevent it from falling into the hands of the revolutionaries.

This does not explain what happened to the money nor do any records exist for such an enterprise in the case of a reversal in the war's fortunes.
